The Big “Apple”

Posted on August 17, 2010

With Apple overtaking Microsoft in becoming the world’s largest tech company, Apple may face some of the same obstacles that plagued Microsoft. The European Union is skeptical about the legality of Apple’s closed shop practice, meaning that application for Apple’s prodcuct are required to come from Apple itself. The EU Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, states that Apple “cannot just choose to deny interoperability with their product” and “consumers need choice when it comes to software or hardware products.”

Perhaps with all of the new iphone criticism, Apple will let their applications become open source and they will begin to branch out in more of a main stream fashion.  Either way, now that Apple is no longer the anti-establishment underdog and fighting against evil corporations, we’ll see how their customer relations hold up.  Despite the fact that Apple might be leading the pack with innovation, both hardware and software companies seem to be catching up…finally.  The competition has become legitimately fierce with the variety of smart phones being introduced into the marketplace.
